How to Buy a Used Car in NZ: The 4Guys Buying Process

Buying a used car should feel straightforward, not stressful. At 4Guys Autobarn we have sold vehicles to thousands of New Zealanders from our Hamilton yard, and the buying process is one we have refined over many years. Here is what to expect from first enquiry to driving away, and what you can do at each stage to make it smoother.

Step 1: Find the Right Vehicle

Start online. Our stock includes Japanese imports, American muscle and NZ-new vehicles, and you can filter by price, body style and more. If you have a budget in mind, our guides to cars under $15,000, hybrids, SUVs and hatchbacks are a good place to begin.

Tip: shortlist two or three vehicles instead of falling for the first one you see. It makes comparing much easier.

Step 2: Ask Questions and Get the Full Picture

Once you have found a vehicle, get in touch. Ask about its history, its condition, and anything the listing does not cover. We are happy to send extra photos and details.

What to ask:

How many owners has it had, and is there service history?
Is it a Japanese import or NZ-new?

Step 3: Sort Your Finance

If you need finance, it helps to get this moving early. Use our finance calculator to see what a vehicle might cost you, then apply online. We work with a wide range of lenders, so we can look for an option that suits your situation. You can read more on our car finance page.

Tip: knowing your budget before you visit means you can focus on the car instead of the numbers.

Step 4: Deal With Your Trade-In

Got a vehicle to move on? You can put its value towards your next one. Submit your details through our sell or trade page and we will appraise it at our yard. If you still owe money on it, our guide to trading in with an existing car loan explains how that works.

Step 5: Inspect and Test Drive

Nothing beats seeing a car in person. Visit us at 20 Arthur Porter Drive in Hamilton, open seven days, and take it for a drive. Check the way it starts, drives, brakes and steers, and look over the interior and electrics.

Tip: you are welcome to arrange your own independent inspection if it gives you extra peace of mind. Talk to us about it.

Step 6: Paperwork and Payment

When you are happy, we take you through the price, paperwork and payment details. If you are financing, the lender paperwork is completed at this stage too. Read anything you are unsure about before you sign, and ask us if something is not clear.

Step 7: Collect or Have It Delivered

Once everything is finalised, you can collect your vehicle from our Hamilton yard. Not local? We can arrange delivery anywhere in New Zealand, so distance does not need to stop you buying.

Step 8: Protect Your Purchase

Before you drive away, think about protection. Optional mechanical breakdown cover can help with unexpected repair costs, and you can look at car insurance for accident and theft cover.
