Hybrid, PHEV or EV: What's the Difference?
Petrol Hybrid
Runs on petrol with a small battery that recovers energy through braking, cutting fuel use by around 40–60% compared to a standard petrol car. No plugging in required. Models like the Toyota Prius, Aqua and Corolla Hybrid are fully exempt from road user charges, so you only pay tax at the pump.
PHEV
Has a larger battery you can charge from a wall socket, giving you a short pure-electric range (often 30–60km) before it switches to petrol. Good for short commutes on electricity with no range anxiety on longer trips. PHEVs pay a reduced road user charge of $38 per 1,000km, half the rate of a full EV.
EV
Runs purely on a battery with no petrol engine at all. Lowest running costs per km, but you're relying entirely on charging infrastructure and battery range. Full EVs currently pay road user charges at roughly double the PHEV rate.
What Does It Actually Cost to Run a Hybrid in NZ?
Standard petrol hybrids remain one of the cheapest vehicle types to run in New Zealand. Because they use the petrol excise tax system rather than road user charges, there's nothing extra to budget for beyond what you already pay at the pump, and owners typically see 40–60% better fuel economy than an equivalent petrol-only car.
Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) have paid road user charges since 1 April 2024, currently set at $38 per 1,000km, about half the rate charged to full electric vehicles. It's worth factoring this into your budget if you're cross-shopping a PHEV against a standard hybrid.
The government's Clean Car Discount rebate scheme, which previously offered up to $1,700 toward a hybrid, ended on 31 December 2023 and is not available on any vehicle purchased today. The savings with a hybrid now come purely from lower fuel and servicing costs, not a government rebate.

Are hybrid cars exempt from road user charges in NZ?
Standard petrol hybrids (like the Prius, Aqua and Corolla Hybrid) are fully exempt from road user charges, you just pay fuel tax at the pump as normal. Plug-in hybrids are not exempt and have paid a reduced RUC rate of $38 per 1,000km since April 2024.
Do hybrid cars need special servicing?
Hybrids need the same regular servicing as a petrol car, plus occasional checks on the hybrid battery and drive system. Regenerative braking also means brake pads and discs typically last longer than on a standard petrol car. Our workshop can handle both.
Are imported hybrids reliable?
Japanese-import hybrids from brands like Toyota and Honda have a strong reliability track record. Applicable imported vehicles we sell complete entry compliance through VINZ and Drivesure before going on the yard, so the vehicle's condition, including the hybrid system, is checked before it's offered for sale.
