What Is Usually Covered
Cover is usually organised by vehicle system. Depending on the provider and tier you choose, the systems protected can include:
- Engine and cooling
- Gearbox or transmission
- Drive train, including differentials and driveshafts
- Fuel system
- Steering and suspension
- Brakes
- Electrical components and air conditioning
- Hybrid and EV high voltage battery, on eligible Provident and Autosure policies
Higher tiers of cover generally protect more systems and offer higher claim limits. Cover, limits and exclusions depend on the policy, and the full details are always set out in the Provident or Autosure policy document. Read it before you decide.

Mechanical Breakdown Cover FAQs
- We offer mechanical breakdown cover through two established New Zealand providers, Provident and Autosure. Which one we recommend depends on your vehicle's age, kilometres, and whether it is petrol, diesel, hybrid or EV. Our team can talk you through the options when you buy.
- Provident's Classic Cover suits standard petrol and diesel vehicles up to 16 years old or 225,000km, with Hybrid Shield and EV Shield options for hybrid and electric vehicles. Autosure offers Smart Cover and Extreme Plus tiers with $5,000 or $10,000 claim limits, available across petrol, diesel, hybrid and EV vehicles. Both include parts, labour and roadside assistance benefits. We can compare the two against your vehicle.
- Car insurance covers accidental damage, theft and third-party liability. Mechanical breakdown cover, sometimes called a mechanical warranty, instead helps pay for repairs when a covered mechanical or electrical part fails unexpectedly. Many customers choose to have both.
- Cost depends on the provider, the tier of cover, your vehicle's age and kilometres, and the term you choose. We can get you a specific quote from Provident or Autosure for your vehicle. Whether it is worth it comes down to how much peace of mind you want against an unexpected repair bill.
- Yes, in many cases the cost of your cover can be included in your finance application. Ask our team when you apply for finance or request a quote.
- Both providers exclude pre-existing faults, general wear and tear, routine servicing, and damage from accidents or misuse. Provident and Autosure each set out their specific inclusions and exclusions in the policy document, which we recommend reading before you decide.
