Car Finance Without a Regular Job in NZ: Benefit, Super, ACC and New Jobs

Car finance without a regular job is possible in New Zealand. If your income comes from a benefit, NZ Super, ACC weekly compensation, or a job you have only just started, you are not automatically ruled out. NZ lenders are required to check that a loan is affordable for you, and that comes down to how much regular income you have, how reliable it is, and what is left after your essential costs. Where the money comes from matters less than whether it is steady and you can prove it.

This guide explains how lenders look at each type of non-wage income, what to have ready, and how to improve your chances. If you are working but want to know how much you need to earn, see our separate guide on what income you need for car finance.

The Short Answer

Yes, some lenders will consider car finance if you are on a benefit, NZ Super or ACC, or if you are on a trial or probation period in a new job. Each lender has its own policy, so being declined by one does not mean you will be declined by all.

What every lender has in common is the law. In July 2024 the Government removed the detailed affordability rules from the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act (CCCFA) regulations, but kept the core requirement that lenders make reasonable inquiries to be satisfied a loan is affordable (MBIE). In practice, that means lenders want to see regular income, realistic expenses, and repayments that fit comfortably in between.

Income Types Lenders May Consider

Work and Income Benefits

Main benefits are regular and easy to verify, but they are usually lower than wages, so affordability is tighter.

NZ Super

Paid fortnightly for life once you qualify, which makes it one of the most stable incomes a lender can see.

ACC Weekly Compensation

Regular while it lasts, but often temporary, so lenders will ask how long it is expected to continue.

New Job or Trial Period

A signed employment agreement and your first payslips can carry real weight, even before the trial ends.

Casual or Part-Time Work

Irregular hours can still count. Lenders usually average your pay over several months of bank statements.

Combined Household Income

A partner's income or a guarantor can strengthen an application that would be too tight on one income alone.

What Lenders Actually Look At

Whatever your income source, an NZ lender assessing a car loan is weighing up the same handful of things:

  • Regularity: is the money paid on a set schedule, weekly or fortnightly?
  • Verifiability: can it be confirmed through bank statements, payslips or official letters?
  • Duration: how long is it likely to continue? Permanent income scores better than temporary income.
  • Surplus: after rent, power, food, existing debts and other essentials, is there enough left to cover the repayment with a buffer?
  • Credit history: how you have handled bills and debt in the past. Our guide to credit scores for car finance covers this in detail.

Car Finance on a Benefit

Benefit income is paid regularly and is simple to verify, which helps. The challenge is the amount. Because benefits are designed to cover basic living costs, there is often not much left over once essentials are counted, so lenders tend to look very closely at affordability and may approve a smaller loan than you were hoping for.

To give yourself the best chance:

  • Keep the loan amount modest. A reliable car in the under $15,000 range is far easier to get over the line than something at the top of your budget.
  • Have recent bank statements showing your payments going in, plus any letters from Work and Income confirming your entitlement. You can download your letters as PDFs from MyMSD (Work and Income).
  • Pick a car that is cheap to run. Fuel, WoF, registration and servicing all come out of the same budget. Our most reliable used cars and best used hybrids guides are a good starting point.

Be wary of any lender that approves a benefit-funded loan without asking about your expenses. Repayments that leave you short every week are not a good deal, whatever the car.

Car Finance on NZ Super

NZ Super is paid fortnightly, and it is not means-tested, which makes it a dependable income from a lender's point of view. From 1 April 2026, a single person living alone receives $1,110.30 a fortnight after tax at the M tax code, and a couple who both qualify receive $854.08 each (Work and Income). Rates are reviewed every 1 April.

Superannuitants often have an advantage if they own their home or have low housing costs, as that leaves more room in the budget. Some lenders may also look at the loan term against your age, so a shorter term with slightly higher repayments can sometimes be the easier approval. If you have savings, putting down a deposit lowers the amount you need to borrow and the total interest you pay.

Car Finance on ACC Weekly Compensation

ACC usually pays up to 80% of the income you earned before your injury as weekly compensation, and you need to apply for it separately from your injury claim (ACC). It is taxable and paid regularly, so a lender can verify it through your bank statements.

The question most lenders will ask is how long it will last. If you are expected to return to work soon, a lender may look at your pre-injury job and your return-to-work plan. If your compensation is long term, it may be treated more like ongoing income. Either way, be upfront about your situation and bring anything that shows the expected timeframe.

Car Finance in a New Job, Trial or Probation Period

Starting a new job is one of the most common reasons people need a car, and it is also when your work history looks thinnest on paper. The good news is that many lenders look at your current employment agreement, not just how long you have been there.

It helps to know the difference between the two arrangements your contract might include:

  • 90-day trial period: can last up to 90 days, must be agreed in writing before you start, and only applies if you have not worked for that employer before. Since 23 December 2023, employers of any size can use them (Employment New Zealand).
  • Probation period: often longer, but unlike a trial, it does not remove your right to raise a personal grievance if you are dismissed.

Because an employer can end a valid trial period without the usual protections, some lenders treat trial periods more cautiously than probation. Your best evidence is a signed employment agreement showing your pay and hours, your first payslips, and a history of steady work before this role, even in a different industry.

If you were on a benefit and have just started work, remember you need to tell Work and Income about your new job and earnings, as it may affect your payments.

How to Apply Without a Regular Job

Check Your Numbers

Use our finance calculator to see what weekly repayment fits after your essential costs, not before them.

Gather Your Proof

Three months of bank statements, ID, and letters or agreements that confirm your income and how long it will last.

Apply Once

One application through a dealer with access to several lenders avoids a string of credit checks on your file.

Ways to Strengthen Your Application

  • Borrow less: a cheaper, reliable car means smaller repayments and an easier approval. Use the car finance calculator to compare loan amounts and terms.
  • Add a deposit if you can: even a small one reduces the lender's risk. If you have none, read about no deposit car finance.
  • Clear or reduce other debts: buy now pay later accounts, credit cards and overdue bills all eat into the surplus a lender is looking for.
  • Consider a guarantor or joint applicant: someone with steady income who agrees to share responsibility for the loan. They need to understand they are fully liable if you cannot pay.
  • Have your documents ready: our checklist of documents needed for car finance covers the basics.
  • Understand the rate: rates through our lenders range from 10.69% to 17.95% p.a. depending on your circumstances. Our guide to car finance interest rates explains what moves your rate up or down.

Other Help Worth Knowing About

If you already own a car and the real problem is a repair bill, finance may not be the answer. Work and Income can generally pay up to $400 towards some car repairs if you need the car for things like work, health or because there is no public transport. You do not have to be on a benefit to qualify, but income and asset limits apply and the money has to be paid back (Work and Income).

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Some NZ lenders will consider benefit income, as long as it is regular, can be verified, and the repayments are affordable after your essential living costs. Approval amounts are often lower than for wage earners, so a modest loan on a reliable, low-cost car gives you the best chance.
  • Yes, many lenders see NZ Super as stable income because it is paid fortnightly and is not means-tested. Low housing costs and a deposit help. Some lenders may prefer a shorter loan term, depending on your age.
  • It can. ACC usually pays up to 80% of your pre-injury income, and it shows clearly in your bank statements. Lenders will want to know how long it is expected to continue, so bring anything that shows your expected timeframe or return-to-work plan.
  • Some lenders will, others prefer to wait until the trial ends. A signed employment agreement, your first payslips and a steady work history before this job all help. Because a valid trial lets an employer end the job without the usual protections, it is often treated more cautiously than probation.
  • Usually photo ID, proof of address, and around three months of bank statements showing your income. Add whatever confirms your income source: Work and Income letters from MyMSD, ACC correspondence, or your employment agreement and payslips for a new job.
  • Your rate depends on your whole application, including credit history, loan size, deposit and the vehicle, not your income source alone. Rates through our lenders range from 10.69% to 17.95% p.a.
  • Yes. A guarantor with steady income can make a tight application workable. They become legally responsible for the loan if you cannot pay, so it is a serious commitment for them.
  • For repairs, Work and Income can generally pay up to $400 if you need the car for work, health, disability or a lack of public transport. Income and asset limits apply, you do not need to be on a benefit, and the money is repaid.
