Exact years and kilometres vary a lot by model. A $15,000 Honda Fit will usually be newer than a $15,000 Mazda CX-5, because smaller cars cost less to begin with.

Japanese Import or NZ-New?

At this budget you'll see both. Japanese imports often have lower kilometres and higher spec levels, because Japanese owners tend to trade up early. NZ-new cars come with a local ownership history you can trace, and are built to New Zealand specifications from day one. Both can be excellent buys. The condition of the individual car matters more than where it came from.

How to Choose the Right Car Under $15,000

• Condition beats low kilometres. How a car has been looked after, and how it drives on a test drive, tell you more than the odometer alone
• Check the safety rating. Look the model up on the Rightcar website to see its safety and fuel economy ratings
• Get the history checked. Make sure the car has no money owing and hasn't been written off. A reputable dealer will do this for you
• Think about running costs, not just the sticker price. Fuel, insurance, servicing and tyres all add up
