The Nebula Carina Just Got More Powerful: New 3.0L V6 Now at 4Guys Autobarn
We're excited to announce that 4Guys Autobarn now has the Nebula Carina 4x4 motorhome, built by Essence RV, available with a new engine option: the 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel. As an authorised 4Guys Autobarn dealer for the Nebula Carina range, we can now offer buyers a genuine choice between the existing 2.0L bi-turbo and the significantly more powerful V6, both built on the same Ford Ranger 4x4 chassis.
If you haven't seen the Nebula Carina before, it's a fully self-contained 4x4 motorhome designed specifically for New Zealand conditions, from gravel back-roads to alpine passes. You can see the full specifications on our Nebula Carina page. This post is about what the new engine option changes.
2.0L Bi-Turbo vs 3.0L V6: What's Different?
2.0L Bi-Turbo Diesel (Standard)
Power: 154kW
Torque: 500Nm
Transmission: 10-speed automatic
A proven, efficient engine that suits relaxed touring and everyday driving well.
3.0L V6 Turbo-Diesel (New at 4Guys)
Power: 184kW
Torque: 600Nm
Transmission: 10-speed automatic
Noticeably more punch for hills, gravel and a fully loaded motorhome, at the cost of a bit more fuel use.
Why More Power Matters in a Motorhome
A motorhome isn't a light vehicle. Once the Nebula Carina's living pod, water tanks, kitchen fit-out and gear are all accounted for, the chassis is doing meaningfully more work than it would carrying a tray or ute canopy, which is exactly why Essence RV upgrade the Nebula Carina's suspension to a 3500kg GVM in the first place.
The extra torque of the V6, 600Nm versus 500Nm, is what you feel pulling away from a stop, climbing a grade on State Highway 1, or working through a steep gravel section on the way into a remote camp spot. The 2.0L bi-turbo is a perfectly capable engine, but the V6 gives you more margin when the motorhome is fully loaded and the terrain isn't flat.
The trade-off is fuel use. Published figures for the base Ford Ranger put the 2.0L bi-turbo around 7 to 8 L/100km and the V6 around 9 to 10 L/100km, though a fitted-out motorhome will use more than either figure due to the extra weight and less aerodynamic body. If most of your driving is flat, sealed roads at a relaxed pace, the 2.0L remains a sound, more economical choice. If you're planning to explore further off the beaten track, tow, or simply want the extra confidence on hills, the V6 is worth the difference.

3.0L V6 Nebula Carina FAQs
What's the difference between the 2.0L and 3.0L Nebula Carina?
Both are built on the same Ford Ranger 4x4 chassis. The 2.0L bi-turbo produces 154kW and 500Nm, while the new 3.0L V6 produces 184kW and 600Nm, giving noticeably more pulling power for a fully loaded motorhome.
Is the 3.0L V6 worth the extra power?
If you're planning to explore further off sealed roads, tackle steeper terrain, or want more confidence towing or fully loaded, the V6's extra torque makes a real difference. For mostly flat, relaxed touring, the 2.0L remains a capable and more economical option.
Does the V6 use more fuel?
Yes, generally. Published figures for the base Ford Ranger put the V6 around 9 to 10 L/100km versus 7 to 8 L/100km for the 2.0L bi-turbo, though actual use in a fitted-out motorhome will be higher than either figure.
Can I still get the Nebula Carina with the 2.0L engine?
Yes. Both engine options are available through 4Guys Autobarn, so you can choose whichever suits your budget and how you plan to use the motorhome.
Can I get finance on a Nebula Carina?
Yes. Finance is available through providers including UDC Finance, Finance Now, Marac Car Loans and MTF. See our car finance page or get in touch to discuss terms.
Where can I see the Nebula Carina in person?
Visit us 7 days a week at 20 Arthur Porter Drive, Hamilton, or call (07) 849 0083 to arrange a time to see both engine options.
